I dont know if this has been asked or not but how about giving us ftp access so we can add stuff without waiting for one of you guys to add it for us?
steve
Believe me, we want to give you guys everything we can. I bug Devin all the time to make some sort of web file manager, or allow limited FTP access to let you take care of mods, but there's just too big a security risk that goes along with that.

I will keep bugging him though. He gets smarter every day, so eventually he's bound to create some kind of impenetrable wall for the bad seeds.

I always thought there was only 1 ipb set.
steve
I don't even know how Devin does it, but no, this system isn't that simple.
Cheating98
so it is more complex that gross seb flipper
steve
It is a 100% custom-coded, unique, complex system.

hmmm ok. I see what you mean about sucurity.

Can't you edit the CHMOD? Or is that just for when you are actually browsing the forum?
ymwoods
FTP or anything like that will ALWAYS be a risk end of, so will any kind of web style one too, with them all on the same server (or spread over several) then it is always possible that someone will somehow manage to get (either by wanting to or accidentally) access to the Root of the server or something like that and obv if they do then bye bye goes your forums if they decide to do anything nasty

Also with people installing Mods themselves it means you have a bugger chance of people messing it up, Devin having to restore backups of the board etc which would probably be more of a pain then doing mods separately...atleast untill RB grows and he has a backlog of like 300 Mods to install lol

How many Mods do you install a day on average Devin??
.pavhead
I'm guessing not many, considering only a select few have asked for them on the forum. But then again, you do use the Support Ticket System now, so I don't know.
devin
ymwoods: Depends on the day, but there aren't many in the queue right now since I just tackled a bunch.

.pavhead: What? Sorry, didn't understand.

Just to reiterate, complete FTP access is not something we can offer. The closest we could come to FTP would be to offer a file manager with support for working with HTML and image files, that way no executable code is manipulated.

It was an answer to ymwods message.

I think Devin was referring to:

.pavhead
Oh right. Erm, cant you edit the CHMOD on the ftp access, or can you only do that on files?
devin
I still don't understand your statement, are you sure you are talking about modes?

I think he means editing a file (or in this case it is called CHMOD'ing it) so that a user can't edit specific files for a security risk. CMODS set permissions so users can edit some things, but not all.

Is that any clearer? Did I even get what you were trying to say, pav?
.pavhead
Yes, but I understand that you can't do it like that smile.gif

Why not? I mean, if we screw up our own site, we screw up our own site, right? And can't you make someone's RB site accessible through FileZilla, anyways? How hard could that be?
devin
The key issue is that, if someone can edit the files that need to be edited (which are the IPB PHP files), someone could also insert code that would do not-so-nice things on our system.

So, in terms of the difficulty, no it would not be hard, but there would be virtually no security.

I'm going to close this thread because without a doubt there will not be FTP access to integral system files.
